Animal Serum Processing:
Serum Handling
Storage & Shelf Life:
Store all serum products at -20º C or below, unless otherwise indicated on the
label. Do not use a frost- free or de-icing type of freezer. Stability studies have
shown that serum products may be stored for up to five (5) years under these
conditions with little or no detrimental effect. Each product is labeled with
storage instructions.
Thawing & Allocation:
As with all serum and plasma, thaw these products rapidly. A 37º C water bath is preferred.
Glass bottles should be allowed to stay at room temperature for an hour before being placed in
the water bath to avoid breakage. Do not repeatedly freeze and thaw serum products. This will
show degradation of the numerous active components of the serum. Occasionally lipid and or
calcium particulates may appear in the serum. This does not indicate a problem with sterility
or serum performance.
